The Britannia Story
The Britannia is an iconic location within Southend-on-Sea, with a rich history to match.
The Britannia was originally built in 1793 and was used as a residence until 1841. Between 1841 and 1854, it was converted into a hotel to accommodate Southend’s rising visitor numbers.
The building has become an iconic location within Southend’s community, known by multiple generations for one of its many faces all of which contributing to it’s rich history. In 2016 the building was purchased by Stockvale, who were eager to restore the Britannia to its former glory however the dangerous conditions caused complications.
Eager to preserve the building’s rich heritage, the front of the building was maintained whilst the renovation works took place. A full restoration began of the exterior and interior and finally re-opened in September 2019 as a high-quality, fish & chip restaurant.

Fish and Chips, the quintessential British dish, usually served with a disproportional sprinkle of salt and more than a splash of vinegar, then wrapped in yesterday’s newspaper.
Well times have moved on. Introducing Heritage Fish and Chips, taking our much loved national dish and serving it in the way it should be served.
We believe Fish and Chips should be: Tasty and delicious without being overpowering. Simple, yet presented with style and we hope you agree.
